For over a 120 Kilometers the Franklin River flows from Tasmania’s Central Plateau through deep limestone and quartzite gorges and dense rainforest of beach trees and Huon Pine to its confluence with the Gordon River. This wild and turbulent river is the heart of the Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park and part of the larger 3.46 million acre Tasmania Wilderness World Heritage Area. In February of 2013 Moe Witschard, Brad Meiklejohn, and Forrest McCarthy enjoyed eight leisurely days packrafting this world-class whitewater run through primeval wilderness.

It was a stellar year for packrafting. Starting with a whirlwind tour of Bosnia and ending on the Salmon River of Return it’s was a full year of non-stop whitewater fun. If this year is even half as fun as last year, good times will be had. Thanks to all my willing and skilled packrafting partners. I look forward to even more adventures together. It just keeps getting better.

Another packrafting video of a 7-day journey down the Franklin River in Tasmania. It is one of Australia’s most beautiful rivers and always an amazing adventure.

A quick packrafting trip at Bents Basin (sydney):

Packrafting trip down the Hollyford River in northern Fiordland National Park, New Zealand.

Paddling the Jarbidge and Bruneau Rivers requires navigating long committing desert canyons filled with rattlesnakes, mandatory portages, sharp raft piercing rocks, poison ivy, and a healthy population of insects. It‘s also one of the most beautiful and thrilling wilderness adventures you can have.

On May 11-13 Moe Witschard and I made the 80-mile run. The USGS Bruneua River Gage reported 700 cfs.

American Whitewater offers online descriptions of both Jarbidge and Bruneau. In 2009 these two wild rivers were honored and protected by the establishment of the 89,996-acre Bruneau-Jarbidge Rivers Wilderness.

Great looking trip. I would love to make that one some day.

Near Delta, Colorado.

The same heat that causes the less ambitious among us to curse it’s stifling presence has brought relief from the mountains down to us.

Last night after work we partook of it’s splashy goodness.

It ain’t about the boat, nor any perceived skill level–you just have to get out there and get wet.

Hardshell kayaks and packrafts were equally represented. Both were outnumbered by innertubes and Wal-Bucket inflatables.

All were smiling, laughing, glowing. And cool despite the heat.

I call it ‘cross training’, though I’m still not sure what for…

Get out and get some if you can!

Nice surfing action Mike C! Impressed. Thanks for helping me out by embedding my video on the Australian/NZ forum!

A short video of a fun day on the Lea River in Tasmania last summer. Super low water level but surprisingly still a great day out. Not really paddling - more like ‘Rock Slidin’ Tassie Style’:
