Cracking the Tavaputs: Desolation-Gray June 5th

Hello Folks,

A friend and I are looking for a couple folks to packraft the Desolation - Gray canyons of the Green in Utah over June 5th-8th. We’ve got a permit, permission, and a plan, just need two more to get the “cheap” rate on an air shuttle with gear.

The plan is to meet up at the Price Utah BLM office at 9AM on Thurs June 5th, do the river check-in, then drive to Green River, drop a car (or bike?) at the takeout, then drive over to the Green River airport, fly into Peter’s Point (39.734943, -110.116669) and hike 10 miles down Jack Creek to the river. Good campsites at the confluence. Then spend Fri- Sun on the river and drive back to Salt Lake Sunday night. This cuts off 26 miles of mosquito infested flat water paddling and puts us in at the start of the rapids and a 54 mile run. There are drill rigs at the landing strip but once in Jack Creek it should be a nice hike on a dirt road then trail. Cost per person, $145 flight (with 4 people) + $25 river permit + ~$5 misc fees. So $175 each.

This trip plan eliminates two headaches of a Deso river trip, namely the horrendous shuttle and the first 1-2 days of flat water paddling. It’s a fantastic canyon steeped in outlaw, Native American, and river running history. The river will be peaking making the paddling exciting (class II and III) but still pretty low consequence. The side canyon hiking is supposed to be spectacular.

PM me or call 801-649-6438 if interested.
