Hi all,
I wanted to share a recent packrafting day we had here in China, and a few thoughts from the experience.
We were a small group with mixed experience levels, so we chose a relatively easy river section (mostly Class I–II, with a few slightly faster sections). The main goal was to keep things safe and enjoyable for everyone rather than push into anything too technical.
Overall, it turned out to be a really positive experience. The flow was steady, with a good balance between calm stretches and light current. It gave newer paddlers enough time to get comfortable, while still keeping things interesting.
One thing that stood out was how quickly beginners adapted. After a short time on the water, most of them were already moving more confidently and starting to read the current a bit better. By the end of the trip, the overall comfort level had improved quite a lot.
From an organizing perspective, there were a few challenges—mainly around coordinating timing, gear checks, and making sure everyone was properly set up before launching. But once on the water, everything flowed much more smoothly.
Packrafting is still relatively niche here compared to what I see in other countries, but experiences like this make me feel there’s strong potential for growth, especially for more accessible, beginner-friendly trips.
I’ve attached a few photos from the day.
Would be interested to hear how others approach similar mixed-experience group outings, especially in terms of safety briefings and river selection.
